Last night TD Bank Group was recognized by The Great Place to Work Institute as one of the Best Workplaces in Canada for the eleventh straight year. We know that it’s our employees who champion our brand, uphold our unique culture and make TD an extraordinary place to work. That’s why we surprised Anne Ethier, one of the Bank’s longest tenured Canadian employees, with a trip to Toronto to accept the award at the Best Workplaces in Canada Awards Ceremony.

A Senior Operations Officer in Global Trade Finance Operations with TD Securities, Anne began her career in 1965 as a teller. Over the last 50 years, Anne has witnessed the Bank evolve to continually meet the unique needs of its customers and employees.

Anne’s admirable career provides a unique perspective of TD. We spoke with her about growth, opportunity and life at the Bank:

Congratulations on 50 years at TD! Tell us, what was your first role?

My father was an employee and encouraged me to work at his branch for the summer. I spent four years in the heart of Montreal’s ‘needle trade district.’ Every Thursday and Friday, we’d see long line-ups of clothing factory workers come in to cash their pay cheques!

What path led you to TD Securities?

In 1969, I was transferred to a commercial branch and after a few years of hard work, I became head teller. Six years later, I accepted the position of Assistant Supervisor of Foreign Exchange at that same branch – a big change, but one I was excited about! In 1980, I became the Supervisor of Foreign Exchange at our Montreal Head Office until 1996.

As the Bank began centralizing foreign exchange products, I transferred to Global Trade Finance to supervise the new Wire Payments Services (WPS) department for Quebec customers. Once the centralization project was complete, I took on the role of Assistant Supervisor of the Documentary Collections Department, where I am now.

Working at TD has shown me that where you start isn’t always where you’ll end up. There are so many opportunities and so much room to grow.

Why did you continue to grow your career at TD?

The Bank has undergone many changes, which makes for interesting and challenging work. When I retire this month, I can proudly reflect on my career and know with certainty that TD was never just a job. It was a gateway to incredible experiences, relationships, and memories that will always stay with me.

What inspires you to do great work every day?

Making a difference and challenging work motivates me. When you enjoy your job as much as I do, it’s easy to give it your all, every single day.
